A Botanical Blueprint: Why I Chose the Fern as My Logo

sarah-conti

When it came time to choose a logo for SKC Designs, I wanted something that truly embodied my philosophy as a designer. The easy route would have been to select an image more traditionally associated with interior design: a structural element, a piece of furniture, or an item commonly found in the spaces I create. But I wanted something deeper, something more meaningful. That's why I chose the fern.

Unlike many of my peers in the industry, I wasn’t interested in representing my brand with a symbol of the work itself — like a sofa, a window, or an arch. These items are important, yes, but they are just that: items. What matters more to me is the process behind the design and the values that shape the interiors I create. The fern, with its ancient history and rich symbolism, represents endurance, resilience, and new beginnings — qualities I see mirrored in the work I do with my clients.

Endurance and Timelessness

Ferns are often viewed as living fossils, withstanding the test of time for over 360 million years. Their ability to endure through not only millennia but also in various climates reflects a strength that is essential to my design approach. I believe in crafting interior spaces that are aesthetically pleasing and built to last. Just as the fern has thrived through ages of transformation, I strive to create spaces that will endure time and trends, providing beauty and functionality for years to come.

Timelessness is at the heart of my work. My design philosophy is rooted in designing rooms that transcend fleeting styles and remain relevant and elegant for generations. In the same way that ferns have a quiet, enduring presence in nature, my goal is to design interiors that subtly evolve with my clients’ lives, while maintaining their original charm and grace.

The Symbolism of Growth

One of the most fascinating features of the fern is its growth process. Ferns begin their lives as tightly coiled fiddleheads, which slowly unfurl into their mature, intricate form. This process of gradual development is a perfect metaphor for the way I approach interior design.

Each project I undertake begins with a small idea, a “fiddlehead” of inspiration. As I work closely with my clients, listening to their needs and desires, that idea begins to unfurl, layer by layer, just like the fern’s fronds. I guide my clients through each phase of the design process, ensuring that we unfold the vision in a way that feels natural and thoughtful. By the time we reach the final stage, the room design has blossomed into a fully realized, bespoke space that reflects my clients’ personalities and enhances their lifestyles.

Creating Strong Foundations

Beneath the surface, ferns have a complex system of rhizomes that spread horizontally underground, anchoring the plant and providing the nutrients it needs to grow. In much the same way, the success of any interior design project lies in having a solid foundation.

I approach each design with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every element—whether it’s the choice of materials, layout, or furnishings—is carefully considered. This foundation is rooted in both my academic background in design and years of experience working on high-end projects. Like the rhizomes that ground the fern, my approach anchors each project with strong systems and processes, ensuring that the final result is not only beautiful but also functional and durable.

A New Beginning

Just as ferns symbolize new beginnings, I see each design project as an opportunity for transformation and renewal. My clients come to me seeking change—whether it’s a complete redesign of their home or the reimagining of a single room. By listening to their needs and goals, I help them envision new possibilities for their space.

The design process is not just about selecting furniture or paint colors; it’s about creating an environment that supports my clients’ lives and nurtures their overall well-being. By cultivating a space that feels like a natural extension of who they are, I provide them with a fresh start, a home that reflects their growth and transformation.

In my personal life, ferns are ever-present in my home, though I rarely incorporate them into my client projects. That decision is intentional. The fern isn’t just a decorative item; it’s a symbol, a blueprint for my design ethos. The delicate fronds, which unfurl from tightly coiled fiddleheads, represent the gradual process of creating a home. Just like a fern grows slowly and steadily, so too do I take the time to understand my clients’ needs and preferences before unfolding each layer of their design.

The Unfolding of a Vision

Ferns grow from small fiddleheads into arching fronds that provide shelter and beauty in the forest. Similarly, I nurture my clients’ initial ideas into fully realized interiors that become a protective and welcoming home. Through a concierge-level service and a keen understanding of design aesthetics, I guide my clients through each stage of the process, ensuring that their vision unfolds naturally and with purpose.

At the end of each project, my clients are left with a space that is not only visually appealing but also deeply personal—a true reflection of their tastes, their family, and their lifestyle. Just as ferns have thrived for centuries, I aim to create interiors that will stand the test of time, providing my clients with a home that endures and evolves with them.

In essence, the fern’s journey from fiddlehead to frond mirrors my own design process, and its resilience and beauty perfectly encapsulate the values I hold in my work. With every project, I strive to create interiors that, like the fern, are both timeless and ever-growing - which is why the fern is my logo.
